I Played A Game With Life by Richardson Susairaj

Foreword:

It has been sometime since I have received this book, but, finally, I got time to review it. Firstly, I must apologize to the author for the late review. There are so many books flooding in and so little time I have. It has been quite a feat for me to take time for reading. I think I must take out more time for reading. However, first is first. That is one reason we stopped accepting any and every author that have contacted us for reviewing. Hope, I get done with the tbr stack ASAP.

Plot (from GoodReads):

SAM, a typical guy, living life happy and carefree, but has an ambition that far exceeds what a normal Chennai boy can aspire to. Encountering ‘Life’ itself in a dream, he’s convinced into playing a game with it. A game that ends when Life's travails get so hard that Sam is pushed to tears.

A girl enters Sam’s life. The moment he sets eyes on her he knows she’s going to play hard to get, but sparks do indeed fly between them, taken into a world of romance.

When everything looked like its going according to the plan, it just wasn't. This is when Life starts pressing down on Sam. Though Sam’s attitude about living life is to be happy and cool, he finds himself being tested.

Circumstances pushes him into a world of discomfort and guilt. Amidst such emotional turmoil, he manages to grip on to hope.

Sam is expected to worry, complain, and give up. One event after another sets him on edge to make him shed that tear which veritably ends Life's game.

Does he win the game with Life, or will he spiral into what so many people who've given up the fight have fallen into? You simply need to be part of his life to find out.

About the author (from GoodReads, too):

Don't forget to give a try - I PLAYED A GAME WITH LIFE - you may actually be surprised.

Our review:
When I accepted this book for reviewing, I was very elated. The cover design and also the title seemed catchy. As always, I go through the description. But, not to mention, one of my friends was reading the same book. I was thinking of having 'read-along' with her. But I thought otherwise from the very moment I saw the insides of the book.

Well, this time I am not complaining about the inner cover design. It is the alignment of prose that scared the day light out of me. The font size was small, yet it is typical with many other contemporary novels. But the spacing and the actual style of the text was a downer. There were practically no paragraphs. Well, there were paragraphs, but there were indentations at the start of each paragraph. It is really irritating. Believe me.

Getting done with criticising the book, let me get to the brighter parts.

Firstly, it is a very rare to come across a book about South India, let alone a book from a South Indian. I always felt that there is a lack of South Indian writers. Call me biased, I don't care. But it is what I feel. There are very few South Indian writers in the market. It is time I started to sprout few author here and there. It is happy to acknowledge that. Finally!

I would rate the story 3 stars outta 5. Believe me, it is pretty good a rating considering our standards, but the other drawbacks have plunged my feeling about the whole book.

Even the exclusive bookmark that I received with the book was a very good advantage of the book.

I thought only authors signed their books. Until I saw the first page of this book.

Everything on that page made sense except for the name! Ritesh Agarwal. Who is he? And that date. What is that? Well, it cannot be a coincidence that my birthday falls on the same day.

However, there is nothing I could tell about the plot of the story. It is just as much as the above mentioned plot says. But its the author's small twist at the end of the story that makes it a pretty good story from a good story.

Final verdict:
It is ones own will to read or not to read this book. Contemporary-lovers you will love this book. People who are starting out with the contemporary stuff, this is a good start.
